Dover fields open with caution amid wet conditions
Dover Parks and Recreation says all multi-purpose fields and baseball diamonds at Chickering Playfields and Caryl Park and Playfields are open with caution, and coaches must cancel play if fields become too wet.
The Dover Parks and Recreation Department announced Oct. 17 that all multi-purpose fields, used for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey, as well as baseball diamonds at Chickering Playfields and Caryl Park and Playfields, are open with caution.
The department is asking coaches and league officials to watch for changing weather conditions throughout the day. If it begins to rain, has recently rained, or if there is standing water, soft spots or water seeping up when walking, the field must be closed and any scheduled practice or game canceled.
Coaches are responsible for checking field conditions before every game or practice, with particular attention to infields, which the department says are more likely to become unplayable. If an infield is too muddy or has standing water, games must be canceled. When conditions allow, practices may still be held using the outfield only, as long as it remains safe and playable.
Residents with questions about a specific team's practice or game schedule should contact their coach or league officials. The department says all field status decisions are final and will stand until further notice, with updates posted as needed, typically on weekdays between noon and 1 p.m. Field status updates are posted on the town's playing field status page.
